The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. It is a celebration of life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives. The world is invited to take action in 2010 to safeguard the variety of life on earth: biodiversity.

On November 30, 2009, the OceanUkraine project was successfully completed. The final project report will be provided to the Flemish Government - Department of Foreign Affairs, in six months. To continue the fruitful collaboration started within the project, the Memorandum of Understanding between the VLIZ and Oceanological Center of  National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was signed by Dr Jan Mees (VLIZ) and Academician Valeriy Eremeev (OC NASU).

The Parties agred to establish and maintain consultation, co-operation and collaboration in respect of matters of common interest to the two organizations, including, but not limiting to, the following areas:

• joint work on the historical marine biological data archeology and rescue at IBSS and marine organizations of Former Soviet Union;
• increasing  the interactions between data managers of both organizations with a focus on marine biological data management;
• cooperation in organization of trainings for young marine scientists;
• cooperation in development on new software and web tools for work with oceanographic and biological marine data;
• joint submission of proposals for international funding;
• development of the Virtual laboratory for remote training of scientists from developing countries;
• help in obtaining visa for exchange visit;
• active and regular exchange of relevant meeting reports, information, research data and results, project plans, documents, and publications regarding matters of mutual interest;
• raising awareness among each organization’s constituents and stakeholders of the work of the other organization in respect of matters of mutual interest.

According to a shift of the Ukrainian NODC to the distributed model that includes the MHI Department of Marine Environmental and Information Technologies responsible for the physical, chemical, and sattelite data and the Laboratory of the Marine Information Systems (LaMIS) of the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas (IBSS) responsible for the marine biological data, LaMIS launched a new web site for the Ukrainian Marine Biological NODC. The new web site is available at the IBSS web server: http://bio.nodc.org.ua/

Prof Georgiy Shulman was awarded with special prize during 2nd Biannual Black Sea Scientific Conference held between 6-8 October, 2008 in Sofia, Bulgaria, for his outstanding lifetime achievements and overall contribution in the study of the Black Sea.

"Ukraine decided to shift to the distributed model of the NODC. From now on in Ukraine in addition to the NODC (DNA) based at the MHI Department of Marine Environmental and Information Technologies there will be one more NODC (DNA) based at the  Laboratory of the Marine Information Systems (LaMIS) of the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas (IBSS). Both institutions are members of the Oceanological Centre of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. LaMIS is headed by Dr Volodymyr Vladymyrov (v.vladymyrov(a)ibss.org.ua)."

Сlimate change in the Black Sea – hypothesis, observations, trends scenarios and mitigation strategy for the ecosystem

It includes information on data products with IBSS data on CD and online developed within international projects
